The Monarch of the Glen, lithograph after Sir Edwin Landseer, 1851
- 100% Silk
- Hand Rolled
- Printed in Macclesfield, England
- 42cm x 42cm
Landseer painted his stag in 1851 for the refreshment rooms of the House of Lords. The House of Commons then declined to pay the £150 fee, so the picture went into private hands and, from 1916, spent decades selling soap, whisky and soup with tremendous dignity. In 2017 the National Galleries of Scotland raised £4 million to buy it, and it now hangs in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. (For the record, twelve points on the antlers make him a royal stag. A true monarch needs sixteen, a technicality that has never once troubled his reputation.)
This version comes from a lithograph after the painting, worked in black line and soft pewter grey, with two companions keeping a respectful distance at the edges of the frame. Printed on silk in Macclesfield and finished with a black hand-rolled edge, it has the colouring of a cold morning in the Highlands and looks most at home against tweed, flannel or anything charcoal.
