Warm light does favours for burgundy and mustard that daylight never offers. Under a dining room's lamps the stripes deepen and glow, and the blue keeps them tied to the suit. Add a white square and the whole thing looks planned.

ABOUT THIS PAIRING
Evening dressing leans on sheen, from satin lapels to silk bow ties. Shantung goes the other way. The tie is woven in northern Italy, a region that has made silk since the 16th century, and its thicker yarns give a dry, matt surface with a slight slub that catches lamplight in small, irregular points. Burgundy, mustard and blue run in stripes down the blade. The tie is 3 fold and self-tipped, handmade in Italy.
The pocket square is Irish linen, hand rolled, in plain white. Three colours are plenty for one evening, and white is the only pocket colour that leaves them alone. The linen's crisp edge also gives the stripes a clean line to sit against.
HOW TO STYLE THIS PAIRING
A navy or charcoal suit in smooth worsted gives the stripes a quiet backdrop, and a dark flannel suit works for a dinner party where the host has lit candles. Keep the shirt white or pale blue and plain. With the tie doing the talking, the linen can relax: a single soft point, set slightly off-level, looks easy beside it. Our How To Fold Guide shows the fold.
