This pocket square features a drawing by Giuseppe Manocchi, a refined design originally intended for a ceiling. The artwork, created with pen and coloured washes including rich tones of Indian red, pink and cerulean blue. The design showcases a sophisticated plan of a square, compartmentalised layout with bands of scrolling hearts framing a central square compartment. This holds a patera encircled by a fan, complemented by a second fan adorned with urns, arabesques, acanthus leaves, calyx and rosettes, all enclosed within an octagonal compartment.
Giuseppe Manocchi (c.1731-82), a talented Roman draughtsman, made a significant impact on British architectural design during the 18th century. His first meeting with James Adam, brother of the renowned architect Robert Adam, in the early 1760s marked the beginning of a fruitful professional relationship. By 1765, Manocchi had joined the Adam brothers' London office, contributing to their architectural projects. However, his most influential work was in producing a series of inspirational drawings, largely created without specific clients in mind. These designs, which often depicted ornamental elements for ceilings, carpets and wall panels, were inspired by Manocchi's studies of antique and Renaissance architecture, including Raphael’s loggia at the Vatican. His use of vibrant colours, frequently enhanced with gouache, set his work apart from the typical watercolours of the period. This bold colour palette had a lasting influence on the Adam brothers’ style and, in turn, transformed British architecture and interior design. Manocchi’s visionary approach to colour and design continues to be celebrated, with over 150 of his drawings preserved at Sir John Soane’s Museum, embodying the creativity that reshaped the aesthetic landscape of the era.
