Royal Ascot is one of those rare occasions where the dress code is only the beginning.

It tells you what to wear. It says nothing about how to wear it well. Two men can follow exactly the same rules and arrive at entirely different results. The difference, almost always, comes down to a tie, a pocket square, and the thought put into both.

What follows is less a set of rules than a field guide to thinking clearly about colour, silk, and the accessories that do most of the talking.
