Watanabe Seitei spent a formative period studying in Paris before returning to Japan to refine his kacho-ga, the art of birds and flowers, into something altogether more arresting. This watercolour catches a kingfisher at the precise, violent instant of the strike: wings thrown back, beak breaking the surface, reeds rendered in swift black ink strokes against a pale winter mist. The palette is cool and restrained, the drama entirely in the movement. Printed onto Mulberry silk and finished with a hand-rolled edge, it suits a charcoal suit as readily as it does a pale linen jacket.
