Wheat Field with Cypresses, drawing, by Vincent van Gogh, 1889
- 100% Silk
- Hand Rolled
- Printed in Macclesfield, England
- 42cm x 42cm
In June 1889, a few weeks into his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, van Gogh painted a wheat field beneath a stand of cypresses and a sky he described to his brother as like a piece of Scotch plaid. He then drew the whole composition again in pencil and reed pen, and posted the drawing to Theo in Paris on 2 July. That drawing, now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, is the version on this square.
Without the colour, you can see how the picture is built: short stabs of the pen for the wheat, curling hooks for the clouds, and a cypress drawn in thick, flickering strokes that still seem to be moving. Printed in Macclesfield in soft grey and ink black inside a pale border, with a sky-blue hand-rolled edge, it is quiet enough for the office and rewards anyone who leans in for a closer look.
