The Lion Hunt is one of a series of paintings produced by the Delacroix in the mid 1800s. Despite a trip to Morocco in 1832 which provided long lasting inspiration for his works, it is unlikely that he ever saw a scene of a lion hunt, but chose to use study animals in zoos and the people and culture from North Africa to create his pictures. In the true Romantic style, the contrast of colours, light and dark, and energetic brushstrokes creates a real dramatism in the scene.
