The Hay Wain, by John Constable, 1821
- 100% Silk
- Hand Rolled
- Printed in Macclesfield, England
- 42cm x 42cm
Constable painted The Hay Wain in his London studio in 1821, working from sketches of the River Stour at Flatford Mill in Suffolk, the stretch of river he grew up beside and painted for most of his life. He showed it at the Royal Academy that year as Landscape: Noon, where nobody bought it. Three years later it won a gold medal at the Paris Salon, and the French, Delacroix among them, made rather more fuss of it than the English had.
The square crops in on the cart itself, empty and halfway across the ford on its way to the haymakers in the far meadow, with a dog watching from the bank and an angler half hidden in the reeds. Willy Lott's cottage, the painting's other famous resident, sits just outside the frame. Printed in Macclesfield and finished with a hand-rolled edge, it puts a summer afternoon in your breast pocket, which is never more welcome than in November. Try it against brown tweed, olive or navy.
