The Battle of Pont d'Arcole (15–17 November 1796) was a battle fought between the French and Austrian armies southeast of Verona, and formed part of the French Revolutionary Wars. Here, Napoleon is depicted seizing a tattered flag and leading his army across the bridge at the end of the battle. This is one of a series of Vernet's battle episodes which brought the battlefield to the audience. He received much praise for depicting the characters and subject matter in a realistic light, rather than an idealised fashion as was the custom at the time.
