Printed onto a wool and silk weave that feels incredibly fine and lighter than air, earning the name Wispy, this square is finer even than the chalk sheet Landseer worked on. The heavy black and white marks hold their density without any of the original's weight, and the square keeps that same unfinished, close-observed quality.

About the design

Study of a Dog is a preparatory sketch by Sir Edwin Landseer, the Victorian painter best remembered for the bronze lions at the foot of Nelson's Column and for a lifetime spent looking closely at animals most people only glanced at. Black chalk builds the weight of the head, heightened with touches of white and red, and a faint sketch of a hand holding a cloth in the corner gives away how the sitter was kept still long enough to be drawn at all. Held today at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is a working study rather than a finished likeness.
