The tie is shantung, woven in northern Italy from thicker yarns that give a dry, matt surface with a slight slub, so it catches lamplight in small, irregular points. It is handmade in Italy.
The square is plain white Irish linen, hand rolled. Three colours are plenty for one evening, and the linen's crisp edge gives the stripes a clean line to sit against.
