ABOUT THIS PAIRING

The tie is a grenadine, a woven silk made in a handful of mills around Lake Como, Lombardy. The weave is a honeycomb, combining the body of a traditional twill with the texture of a knit. The micro dot sits close and disciplined against that texture.

The pocket square is Madder silk, screen printed in multiple steps onto a twill silk base treated with gum arabic, a finish known in the trade as a chalk hand. Madder silk takes its name from the Rubia tinctorum plant, once the source of natural red dye, and today produces the darker, more saturated tones seen here: steel blue, forest green, and gold running through the border.

Worn together, the burgundy in the tie and the blue in the square keep the two connected. It's the grenadine's woven texture against the Madder's printed pattern, rather than two pieces cut from the same cloth, that stops the pairing looking like a matched set bought off a rail.
