© Victoria and Albert Museum, London
During the 1780s, the scientific innovation of balloon flight caught the popular imagination. The first ascent with passengers was in a balloon constructed by the Montgolfier brothers, which took off from Versailles near Paris on 21 November 1783. The intense public enthusiasm for ballooning prompted the commercial and domestic production of numerous fashionable objects featuring balloons.
A darker colour blend provides the green to pop within the pocket and allows for a number of different folds. We prefer when worn with a dark jacket in the puff fold, utilising the red and green of the pattern.
