Rushes by a Pool, by John Constable, c. 1821
- 100% Silk
- Hand Rolled
- Printed in Macclesfield, England
- 42cm x 42cm
Constable made this small oil sketch on paper around 1821, the year he finished The Hay Wain, and it has almost nothing in common with that picture. There is no cart, no cottage and no view to speak of, only a clump of rushes at the edge of a pool and the light catching them. He painted sketches like this quickly, usually in the open air, to record weather and light as they happened, and kept them as working material for the larger canvases. This one now belongs to the Yale Center for British Art.
Printed in Macclesfield, the study sits inside a cream border, surrounded by a wider field of the painting in rust and umber, and finished with a sage-green hand-rolled edge. Those warm browns and grey-greens belong to the colder months, and they come into their own against tobacco or olive tweed, or plain navy, where the rust can do the work.
