Delacroix painted 3 works of the same title, painted in 1826, 1835 and 1856. Each painting shows a scene from Lord Byron's 1813 poem The Giaour. Hassan, the Pasha, is ambushed by the Giaour, to the left, before he returns to the monastery. He had fallen in love with Leila, a slave in Hassan's harem, and after he discovered the love affair, Hassan has ordered her to be killed. Here the Giaour exacts his revenge.
