This pocket square is inspired by a number of drawings in an album entitled Merian's Drawings of Surinam Insects & Birds. The album features drawings by the German artists Maria Sibylla Merian and her two daughters. The drawings are watercolours and body colours, heightened with white and gold, on vellum. They are inspired by the flora and fauna that Maria Sibylla saw in the early 1700s while in Surinam on the north-eastern Atlantic coast of South America. The centrepiece is an imaginative, if unlikely, battle between a Muscovy duck and a snake.
A visually interesting and colourful piece, it is guaranteed to enliven any jacket pocket while the white base keeps an aspect of versatility and allows it to be matched to a range of colour ensembles.
