Madder takes the edge off a bright teal ground, leaving a colour that reads rich rather than loud. Navy medallions run down the blade, each with a rust-red centre and a thin cream border that catches the light the silk otherwise absorbs.

A limited edition, made in a small run for Private Label members and never released more widely.

"I can really feel the chalky texture in my finger tips that the Madder silk is famous for… hanging from the neck it feels quite solid and heavy and not flimsy like other ties."

Correct for the board meeting, and the most interesting thing in it.

How to Wear

Works with White, pale blue or pale pink shirts. Light grey tailoring above all, then charcoal and navy.

Patterns The medallions are small, so a fine stripe or a quiet check sits happily beside them. Keep the louder pattern for the pocket.

Skip Bright blue shirts, which flatten the teal, and green tailoring, which argues with it.

Pairs with the Light Grey Superfine Wool Jacket and the Napoleon Crossing the Alps, in Crimson by Jacques-Louis David Pocket Square.

About This Tie

Madder silk takes its name from the madder root, whose dyes once gave the cloth its colour. What has lasted is the finish: a dry, chalky surface with a soft bloom, and colours that look as though they have already been worn for years. Ours is screen-printed in Macclesfield, where the pH of the River Bollin's water has long suited the dyes.

Each tie is handmade in England with three folds and a self-tipped blade, so it ties a full, well-shaped knot and hangs with real weight. Madder is usually printed in reds and browns, which makes a teal this clear the less expected choice.

Care

Dry clean only, and as rarely as you can manage. Madder's chalky finish marks easily with water, so blot a spill straight away rather than rubbing it. Untie it fully after each wearing and roll it loosely rather than hanging it; the creases will be gone by morning.
