Printed onto a wool and silk weave that feels incredibly fine and lighter than air, earning the name Wispy, this square is finer even than the charcoal sheet Degas drew it on. The three repeated figures hold their shape without any of the original's weight, and the square keeps that same unfinished, close-observed quality.

About the design

Ludovic Halévy was Edgar Degas's friend and one of his most frequent subjects, a librettist often found backstage at the Paris Opéra and drawn there repeatedly, always from behind, in top hat and long coat. Here he appears three times over in charcoal, the pose repeated with small shifts in stance, as though Degas were testing which version told the truth. Held today at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.
