Match the tone, or work against it

A tonal pairing keeps the square in the same family of blue as the tie, a shade lighter or in a different weave, so the look reads as considered rather than matched.

A contrasting pairing works the other way. Borrow a colour from elsewhere in the tie, burgundy from a fleck or cream from the ground, and let the square carry it instead.
