There is no cart, no cottage and no view to speak of, only a clump of rushes at the edge of a pool and the light catching them. He painted sketches like this quickly, usually in the open air, to record weather and light as they happened, and kept them as working material for the larger canvases. This one now belongs to the Yale Center for British Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrinted in Macclesfield, the study sits inside a cream border, surrounded by a wider field of the painting in rust and umber, and finished with a sage-green hand-rolled edge.
