A knight in full armour rides through a rocky gorge with two unwelcome companions: Death on a weary horse, crowned with snakes and holding up an hourglass, and a horned, pig-snouted Devil bringing up the rear. The knight looks straight ahead. His dog keeps pace beneath him, and a skull rests in the bottom corner in case anyone had missed the point. The print has long been read alongside Erasmus's \u003cem\u003eHandbook of the Christian Soldier\u003c\/em\u003e: the steadfast man rides on, whatever turns up to keep him company.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery line was cut into copper by hand, and the detail survives the move to silk intact: the chain mail at the knight's wrist, the sprig of oak leaves on his horse's brow, the bristles on the Devil's chin.
