There are a number of ways to finish a tie and everybody has their own preference. Much of our collection is self tipped which is widely considered as a finer way to finish a tie. Although hand rolling is a slightly more expensive way to finish, it removes a lot of the structure of the tie and can occasionally end up misshapen as a result as well as moving around a lot more on those windy days!
As you can see in the above image, the back of the blade of a self tipped tie is made of the same fabric as the rest of it. A lot of companies will use a cheaper silk to line it to avoid the expense of using more of the material used for the main body of the tie but really this is just a cost saving procedure. Self-tipped ties are generally found on better quality neckwear due to a higher cost of production while aiming to maintain the structure and integrity of the tie itself.
We source only the finest fabrics for our ties from mills around the world, often focusing on English production where possible. Most of the mills we work with have been manufacturing fabric for hundreds of years and we take expert care in selecting not only the finest quality but the most suited to tie manufacture. When it comes to our silk and wool printed ties we primarily source them from mills in Macclesfield. Once the centre of the English silk weaving industry and the world's biggest producer of finished silk, the area has been printing silk for over 300 years and at one point had over seventy mills operating in the town. The town is close to a water supply that passes through limestone, and when used in washing and dyeing it gives silk a uniquely attractive lustre.
Each tie is hand cut, tipped and sewn together. Once the tie pieces have been joined together the tie is then pressed ready to be slipped. A woolen lining is placed into the tie and the hand slipper then pins along the tie folding the fabric onto the lining and creating an even seam along the length of the tie. Starting at the narrow end, a stretch loop is added while slipping along the tie. The stretch loop is one continuous piece of thread used to slip the tie without joins. This allows the fabric movement when worn and the stretch loop ensures more flexibility. This is unique to a handmade tie.
The ‘bar tack’ or ‘bullion’ stitch is added at each end of the tie while it is being slipped. This is also a special stitch that shows that the tie has been hand sewn. The self-loop and the label are added before the tie is checked and packed ready for delivery.

The pocket squares are exceptional; in fact I'd collect them all if I could. Those based on old paintings and prints have the advantage that you can fold them in infinite ways, effectively giving you scores of squares in one. The ties are the ideal width..." click to read full review.
