Each tie is hand cut, tipped and sewn together. Once the tie pieces have been joined together the tie is then pressed ready to be slipped. A woolen lining is placed into the tie and the hand slipper then pins along the tie folding the fabric onto the lining and creating an even seam along the length of the tie. Starting at the narrow end, a stretch loop is added while slipping along the tie. The stretch loop is one continuous piece of thread used to slip the tie without joins. This allows the fabric movement when worn and the stretch loop ensures more flexibility. This is unique to a handmade tie.
The ‘bar tack’ or ‘bullion’ stitch is added at each end of the tie while it is being slipped. This is also a special stitch that shows that the tie has been hand sewn. The self-loop and the label are added before the tie is checked and packed ready for delivery.
In 1539 Scabal’s mill in Huddersfield stopped grinding wheat and began to work with cloth for the first time. This historic moment laid the foundation to the Scabal of today that has evolved into a producer of the highest quality fabrics by experimenting with techniques, technology and materials in weaving.
This dedication to innovation allows them to create what they term their rare and elite fibres and combined with their natural production processes allow them to lift the colours from the fibres to produce truly elegant cloths. This has led Scabal to become the fabric supplier to some of the most prestigious tailors and textile businesses around the world.
The choice of whether to choose a tie with either a handrolled or self-tipped finish does generally come down to personal preference, however, handrolling is considered the most luxurious way to finish a tie. The art of hand rolling is a unique craft and truly makes each piece individual and unique. We feel that the precision and care taken by our skilled artisans gives each tie its own unique character, finish and feel. As you can see in the above image, the back of the blade of the tie is expertly and tightly rolled in a very similar way to our pocket squares. Handrolled ties are generally found on better quality neckwear due to the higher cost of production.
We're delighted to announce our latest collaboration with Scabal of Savile Row, to produce a range of handmade wool and cashmere blend ties, offering both self-tipped and hand-rolled finishes.
Through its dedication to innovation and quality, Scabal produces some of the finest cloths for bespoke tailors and textile businesses around the world. The true beauty of Scabal cloth comes from the subtle colours and designs that reveal themselves on closer inspection. In addition to this, the stability of the cloth means that it will always bounce back to its original form, making it perfect for handmade ties.
