They were probably courtesans or actresses, who were equivalently seen as celebrities. Japanese women were widely popular subjects and used as muses by artists. They are represented in traditional outfits and it was made using a limited colour palette and plain background. Nonetheless, the colours are rich and warm, but we can also see the texture in the print itself, due to the fact that it was printed on handmade paper. It belongs to the Ukiyo-e genre, which emerged in Japan in the 17th through 19th centuries. It means pictures of the floating world. Different techniques were used, such as manual print on hand-made paper using woodblocks, or more classic paintings. The subjects were wide, but included female figures, landscapes, and sumo wrestlers and were often inspired by legends.

Eizan Kikugawa (1787-1867) was one of the leading artists of bijin-ga, a term used to describe pictures of beautiful women in Japanese art. Eizan was inspired by other artists such as Utamar, but he slowly developed his own style throughout the years, stopping prints and focusing mostly on paintings, maintaining impeccable design skills throughout his career.

Reviews: Click to read Customer & Expert Product Reviews.

Shipping: Global Express Shipping in 1-4 working days to most locations.
