Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) ca. 1485/90–1576, Venus and Adonis.
This 90x90cm silk scarf features the stunning 'Venus and Adonis' by Titian. Titian was often inspired by tales from Ovid’s Metamorphoses for the paintings he called poesie, 'poetry in paint'. In this painting, the goddess Venus has fallen in love with the handsome hunter Adonis. She foresees that the hunt will be fatal for him, and tries in vain to restrain him from leaving with his hunting dogs. The tragic end of the tale is juxtaposed by the mood of sensuality created with the beautiful view of Venus seen from the back. Numerous paintings from the mid-1540s until the end of his life were created around the subject by Titian and his school. This version was painted at the end of his career and the beautiful quality shows it was certainly produced by the artist himself.

Tiziano Vecellio known as Titan (ca. 1488–1576), is widely seen as the greatest Venetian artist of the 16th century, and gained international fame for his stunning works. He is primarily known for his remarkable use of colour and his approach and teachings were highly influential well into the 17th century. Titian contributed to all of the major areas of Renaissance art, painting altarpieces, portraits, mythologies, and pastoral landscapes with figures. Although Titian's artistic manner changed considerably during the course of his life, he retained a lifelong interest in colour. His mature works may not contain the vivid, luminous tints of his early pieces but their loose brushwork and subtlety are without precedent in the history of Western painting.
Macclesfield was once the centre of the English silk weaving industry and the world's biggest producer of finished silk. The area has been printing silk for over 300 years and at one point had over seventy mills operating in the town. The town is close to a water supply that passes through limestone, and when used in washing and dyeing it gives silk a uniquely attractive lustre.
Our silk scarves are printed at a mill that has been producing printed fabric on the same site for the past fifty years and the process uses water sourced from its own reservoir.
Located in New York City, and colloquially known as 'the Met', the museum was founded in 1870 for the purposes of opening a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. It is the largest art museum in the United States and, with over 7 million visitors in 2016, was the second most visited art museum in the world, and the fifth most visited museum of any kind.
The permanent collection contains over two million works which is divided among seventeen curatorial departments. This consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, Indian, and Islamic art. It is also home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. There are also several notable interiors installed in the galleries, ranging from first-century Rome through to modern American design.
