This Char-Blue Houndstooth 100% Fine Merino Wool Scarf is made from wool supplied by the world-renowned Fox Brothers, weaving fabric in England for over 250 years. A lighter weight scarf, with a classic Houndstooth pattern, it pairs equally well over a tailored jacket or more casual outfits.
The Houndstooth pattern gets the name from the intricate repeating pattern that resembles dog’s teeth. Another classic staple of men's fashion, its popularity stems from its versatility, being able to be easily paired with solid colours to add interest to an outfit, or indeed in addition to other patterns. Houndstooth gets the name from the intricate repeating pattern that resembles dog’s teeth. The origins of the pattern come from coarse wool fabric, that was mainly woven in two colours in an overlapping style to create the abstract shape/tooth. As with many classic patterns, a contrasting coloured overcheck was also added to some versions of houndstooth to make it a little more unique.
Like many modern-day patterns that have their origins in woven fabric, Houndstooth was created in Scotland in the early 1800s. Shepherds and farmers of the 19th century were known to wear this coarse wool to protect them from the harsh weather on the Scottish moors. The pattern has also been referred to as dogtooth, puppytooth, shepherd’s check and even pied-de-poule (“chicken feet”). Houndstooth has been known to bear the name of the larger patterned fabric, dogtooth as a smaller size and puppytooth is the minute version that is incredibly detailed and can make a jacket look like a plain weave from afar.
Up until the 1930s and 1940s, the pattern was relatively unknown to the fashion world. Christian Dior was one of the first modern-day designers to incorporate it into their Haute Couture designs in 1948. Since then, countless designers have used houndstooth which in turn has immortalised the pattern as timeless.
Merino wool is an exceptional material that comes from the Merino Sheep. It is highly regarded for its softness, shine and breathability. The majority of the world’s Merino Sheep are in Australasia, but it actually originates from Spain.
The merino fibres are much softer and finer than others, so when spun into cloth it creates an incredibly soft and hard-wearing material which is perfect for making into winter clothing such as scarves. It is also naturally water repellent and holds incredible insulation without losing any breathability. If the wearer gets caught in the rain, the chances are they won’t feel a chill as the wool retains its insulating properties even when wet.
Throughout the years, selective breeding has enabled the Merino Sheep to produce a much higher grade of ultrafine wool – ranging from 11.5 microns to 24 microns. The fibres are naturally crimped so when they rub together, they create tiny pockets of air to keep the warmth in, and the cold air out. It is also anti-bacterial and incredibly easy to maintain – most merino wool products can be machine washed and tumble dried.
