Our Scabal cashmere scarves have used the warp and weft of the fabric to produce finely finished frayed hems in two contrasting colours. Warp and weft are considered the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric. The lengthwise warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame or loom while the transverse weft is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp. As this fabric uses two different colours for the warp and weft, you get a rich, textured look to the scarf itself while giving two different tones to the edges.
In 1539 Scabal’s mill in Huddersfield stopped grinding wheat and began to work with cloth for the first time. This historic moment laid the foundation to the Scabal of today that has evolved into a producer of the highest quality fabrics by experimenting with techniques, technology and materials in weaving.
This dedication to innovation allows them to create what they term their rare and elite fibres and combined with their natural production processes allow them to lift the colours from the fibres to produce truly elegant cloths. This has led Scabal to become the fabric supplier to some of the most prestigious tailors and textile businesses around the world.
Cashmere is a fine wool fibre coming from the Cashmere goat. The Himalayas and Mongolia are most famous for their goats, which produce wool of a fine and soft nature, protecting the animals from the harsh conditions of the winter season. Cashmere wool is known most famously for its softness, warmth, strength, and durability. The fineness of the fibre ensures the softness of the finished textile. Hair from normal goats will have a diameter of 36 microns, compared to the 19 microns of most types of cashmere. The materials with the finest fibres will be soft to the touch and feel extremely lightweight. Cashmere is of course also very warm and able to keep heat in through its isothermal properties. Its warmth is dependent on the strength of the raw fibres.
Because of the above factors, cashmere is known for being a luxurious and expensive product. Historically, it has always been a high priced item, and gained reputation in the West through its luxurious feel and softness appealing to the upper class women in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries, and has since become staple winter product in the luxury industry.
